My dad died this summer and we had the funeral a couple of months ago. There were several hundred who attended and after the service the wide congregation left the church to observe the committal in the graveyard. We waited quietly as the funeral director spoke with the vicar who was beginning to look very worried. Eventually he came over to the family gathered around the grave, and broke the news to my mum that the gravediggers hadn’t dug a hole big enough for my dad who was 6’ 5”.
We couldn’t help thinking he was having a chuckle to himself as we filed back into the church while the gravedigger was summoned back to complete the job. He was distraught and explained that he had two graves to dig that day and now there was a 7ft one in Oxford that a little old lady would have plenty of room in.
