When I was a child a girl from our primary school died at the age of seven. The parents and the teachers in school talked very openly about it with us and explained it to us although we were quite young, which really helped us to understand why she had died. Before her funeral all her friends and children from school who felt connected with her, drew on her coffin so that it was full of beautiful colours. It looked very nice and made it really personal. It seemed to help the parents to see that they were supported by so many people and that all her friends took part in her funeral by painting on the coffin.
