Over 20 years ago I was a care assistant for a man named Arthur – nicknamed ‘Happy’ and known as Happy to all. He died in hospital but they wouldn’t release the body. He had no official next of kin. Lorraine (another care assistant) that worked with me, caring for him at home, kicked up a fuss and asked to organise a paupers funeral. (He did not want to leave any money and believed in partying and living life to the full – so he had nothing left!)
