My friend Jim and his partner Phil both died during the AIDS epidemic in the 1990’s. My last view of Jim was when he was in agony in hospital being manhandled by many medical professionals. His funeral was then arranged by his family on my birthday. It was a terrible and distancing experience but I got to know his mother and sister. His last wish was for his friends and family to scatter his and Phil’s ashes in Kew Gardens. He didn’t have permission of course. We sneaked the ashes in in two large tesco carrier bags. They were heavy. We drank cold white wine, picnicked and told stories. We took it in turns to go into the trees and sprinkle the boys from holes in the corner of the bags. It was hilarious and perfect. The anniversary is this Friday. Thank you.
