When my sister died very suddenly (subarachnoid haemorrhage), I was able to spend her last 12 hours with her in the ICN before her life support was ‘switched off’. I found she had requested her organs be donated and I was so happy to know this. But I had no idea of the comfort this would give to me – to know she had extended the lives of 6 people through her death was so powerful, so meaningful, I felt her life had not been wasted or lost. Through the transplant coordinator I eventually met the recipient of her liver and we have remained such friends for 21 years until his death this year. Each year we have met for lunch and I’ve loved this annual event being close to a part of my sister, still living!
